Christian Growth Sunday school class

Summer 2022 Adult Sunday school

Scripture tells us that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. We realize that we need physical food to nourish our bodies, to strengthen us, to grow and be healthy, but what about spiritual food? What has God given us so we can be nourished and grow spiritually? The good news is, God has not left us to figure this out on our own. He has given us what the church calls "ordinary means of grace," by which He strengthens and nourishes us. These ordinary means are the word of God, prayer, the sacraments of baptism and communion, and church discipline. During this class, we explore and discuss these means of grace.

The Authority of Scripture

We often take things for granted in our life. We have access to transportation. We have running water that is both hot and cold. When we think about our lives as adopted sons and daughters, we often take for granted what is right in front of us: The Word of God! We should be reminded that God's Word is powerful, and that this Word ought to have a primary place in the life of the Church. Come and explore this week how The Word of God is an ordinary means of Grace and how the Scriptures serve as our overall general authority.

The Preaching of the Word

This Sunday we’ll be looking at the Word of God as a means of grace, specifically the preaching of the Word. The preaching of the Word of God is the primary means God uses to build up his church, equipping and comforting us through it. All other means of grace are shaped by the truth of Scripture. Additionally, we will explore the teaching of the Word of God in the context of the family and the blessing of making this a priority in our household.

Prayer

This week we will be looking at Prayer as an ordinary means of grace. We will be focused on the doctrine of prayer and how God uses this means of grace to shape us in our Christian life. With the Lord's Prayer as a model, we will discuss prayer structure, the different uses of prayer and what it means to pray "in Jesus' name". Finally, we will spend some time discussing some of the misconceptions Christians have about prayer.

The Contexts of Prayer

This week we'll start by reviewing prayer as an ordinary means of grace and why it's so important in the life of a believer. We'll then discuss the different contexts or spheres in which we experience prayer—primarily corporate (church), family, private—and how the Lord uses these to sanctify us.

Church Discipline

This Sunday is the conclusion of our current series. We'll wrap up with a look at church discipline as an ordinary means of grace. This topic may evoke fears of repressive tyrannical church government, but we'll examine how God has given us this gift for building up his church.
