Sanctification Sunday school class

Winter/Spring 2022 Sunday School

Life in Christ is more challenging than we ever expected. Living in the “already, not yet” reality of the Christian life can be confusing. The “already” aspect speaks to the joy and wonder we have when we’re saved by grace at the moment of our justification. The “not yet” points out the hope we have in our glorification and the future perfect life waiting for us in heaven. But in the middle of these two realities is a struggle. The struggle and messy process of sanctification. It’s the process of figuring out what’s going on and the search for what life should look like in Christ.

Introduction

January 30, 2022

How does sanctification begin? It is first through our “union with Christ in his death that the work of sanctification begins” (21). It is in and through the activity of the Holy Spirit in our lives that produces the action of sanctification.

“Looking to Jesus.” The restorative work of sanctification begins by looking to Jesus.

“How it All Begins.” As God’s freed people there are things that we are to do and there are things we are not to do…. What has ended is not sin's existence but sin's domination. What Christ has put to death is not sin itself but the life in which it dominated. Because of Him it is no longer an enslaving power.

“Plain Sailing.” Sanctification is the journey of a lifetime. “Sanctification, as a consequence, it’s a progressive thing. It is anything but plain sailing. It is a struggle, a fight, and unrelenting arduous work.” “Sanctification launches us upon a life of imperfection, conflict, and sorrow. Don’t be surprised, therefore, when you find it so. At the same time, we must not let the severity of the struggle obscure the glory of our hope.”

“Time to Get the Knife Out.” “Christ’s obedience is the model of our sanctification. What does a holy life look like? What does it actually mean to live a holy life? Look at Jesus! As He lived, so also are we to live. As obedience marked him, so obedience is to mark us. It is our duty to ascertain from the whole of Scripture what is the will of God for us and, in the strength of the Spirit, to live in conformity to it just as Christ”.

"Expectations"

March 13, 2022

“The All-Important Setting.” God works through means. There are things that He uses to bring us on, to make us more faithful: God’s word, prayer, and suffering.

“Not in Isolation.” Sanctification takes place within a community of saints. The Lord commanded the teaching and preaching of the word, the taking of the Lord’s supper, and the action of church discipline for His children.

“The Blessing of Holiness.” There are blessings along the way as we “strive for holiness.” Those blessings include happiness, beauty, usefulness, assurance, and glorifying God.

“Why does it matter?” Romans 8:13, “for if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit he put to death the deeds of the body you will live.”
