The Bible Sunday School class

Fall 2022 Adult Sunday school

Do you believe Scripture to be the very Word of God? Is it below our twenty-first-century intellect to hold the Bible as infallible and inerrant? Join us for this Sunday school series as we explore these questions and more. We'll discuss revelation, inspiration, human authorship, the canon, interpretation, and application of the Bible. Through the series, we aim to build a more profound love for God as we see the majesty and purity of His Word.

We are using The Bible, God’s Inerrant Word by Derek Thomas as a guide for this study.

We will be kicking off our class with some introduction to the topic of God's Word. We will spend some time discussing the ways that God reveals Himself to us in general and special revelation. Then we will dig into special revelation specifically and how God speaks to us in Holy Scripture. Finally, we will give an overview of the rest of class and some of the topics we will be discussing.

In our second session on Sunday August 21, we’ll start with a discussion about words. Why are words important? Who decides what words mean? What is the connection between words and truth? How do we as sinners react to words we read or hear? How is the world trending in the treatment of words? Then we’ll see what we can learn by considering these questions while looking at some different categories of words we find in the Bible, like words that follow phrases like “Thus saith the Lord,” words that were spoken by Jesus, and more!

This week we'll be discussing the topic of progressive revelation. God's plan for His people wasn't revealed all at once; later sections of the Bible contain a fuller revelation of God than earlier sections. This isn't movement from error towards truth, but truth towards more truth towards full truth.

This week we will be exploring the idea that Scripture is inspired. What does it mean for the Bible to be inspired? More specifically, we will discuss the concept of verbal, plenary inspiration and how this concept impacts how we approach Scripture. We will then look at the purpose and function of Scripture and the belief that it is self-authenticating. Our goal this week will be to help us build confidence in the fact that the Bible is actually 'breathed out by God' (2 Timothy 3:16).

We hold that Scripture is God-breathed. We also hold that Scripture is written by human authors. Does this result in a contradiction? How should we understand God’s role and man’s role in the authorship of the Bible? This Sunday, we’ll begin to explore this topic and the importance of holding to both of these truths.

This Sunday, we're discussing the importance of the Holy Spirit's testimony to the Bible's divine origin and trustworthiness. We've briefly explored this topic but will dig deeper to see how the Holy Spirit opens our eyes to receive Scripture and believe it.

Join us as we continue part two of our discussion on Human Authorship of the Bible. We will recap the first session discussing the implications of the types of inspiration of Scripture and how it applies to Human Authorship, and during this session we will dig deeper into how God wrote scripture through human hands. It will surely be an engaging discussion!

Every great novel has a solid plot structure. It's a central message that connects the characters, events, and settings to the overall narrative arc. So what is the central message of the Bible? Come this Sunday as we discuss the central truth that unites all Scripture.

This week we will be exploring the concept of the perspicuity or clarity of Scripture. Scripture testifies to its own clarity but not all of Scripture is equally clear. We will spend time talking through the idea that the essential truths necessary for salvation are clear and understandable to all who seek them but there are parts of Scripture that are less clear. We will discuss some aids we have to better understand Scripture and we will distinguish between intellectual knowledge and saving knowledge.

Join us this Sunday as we wrap up our course on the Bible with a discussion about the application of God’s Word. We’ve talked about how we can best understand what God is saying to us in His Word, but what are the effects of our understanding? How does understanding God’s Word change us as a church? As an individual? How do we become “doers of the Word?"
