The Family Sunday school class

The Family - Adult Sunday school

The family is the foundational building block of society. Much of the Bible is spent instructing families, and there is great wisdom to glean from its pages. God also instructs older men and women to teach those who are younger. We each learn from our unique experiences and can offer insight to one another as we seek to be more and more conformed to the image of Christ.

Beginning January 15, The Family Sunday school class will provide a space to discuss the wisdom of God’s Word and encourage one another by sharing our stories. To help facilitate this exchange, the class is structured with about 15 minutes of teaching and 30 minutes of group discussion. It will be a wonderful time of sharing God’s faithfulness through good times and bad and learning to better serve one another through open dialogue.

Audio links of the teaching portion will be added here each week. Full audio including discussion time will be available on Realm and through our newsletter.

Biblical Basics of the Family

January 22, 2023

Genesis describes the first family which is often considered the ideal or standard to which we compare ourselves and others. Once sin was introduced, endless variations of families began, which are often lacking in many respects. Despite flaws, our families can still be a representation of Christ's redemptive power and enduring love. Join our discussion this week as we see how Scripture applies this truth to singles, divorcees, widows, etc.

This week we will begin a three week discussion on Marriage as a foundational aspect of the Christian family. Our focus this week will be on engagement and the early years and how couples can build their marriages on Christ. We will spend most of our time in group discussion.

This Sunday we divided into men’s and women’s groups. The men discussed the implications of what the Bible says about men’s roles and responsibilities in a marriage, and the women discussed the implications of what the Bible says about women’s roles and responsibilities in a marriage.

February 12, 2023

Last Sunday we divided into men’s and women’s groups and discussed the implications of what the Bible says about men’s and women’s roles and responsibilities in a marriage. We shared examples, struggles, and ideas for overcoming struggles. This week we’ll be back together to discuss how these things interact and complement, and how husbands and wives can help each other fulfill what God has called us to.

The Family class will continue this week with a discussion on household finances. Our discussion will be focused on how we can honor God through the finances of the family by being good stewards of what He has given us. We will also explore the connection between communication and household finances.

In Ephesians 6:4 Paul contrasts two approaches to parenting. On the one hand parents can provoke their children to wrath. On the other, parents can bring up the children in the training and admonition of the Lord. Failing to patiently, and constructively train our children in the things of God, we often substitute more fleshly methods of parenting which provoke our children to become angry and discouraged. This Sunday we will discuss some of the what’s, how’s and why’s of parenting.

Our Family Sunday school class is discussing family worship this Sunday. We'll dig into what Scripture tells us about the teaching of God's Word in our homes, how it looks, and how we can prioritize it. Unfortunately, it's common for parents to set lofty goals for family devotions, which sets us up for failure. To help counteract this, we'll discuss ways to help make family worship appropriate for various attention levels and how it can be enjoyable, sustainable, and a blessing to your family.

Loss and suffering are part of the human experience. Through the reality of Adam’s sin, all of mankind has been corrupted where loss is the rule rather than the exception. It comes in all forms from the death of a dream to devastating tragedies that affect generations. What do we as Christians have that gives us hope in these trying circumstances and how does the Bible teach us to respond? Come Sunday and participate in our discussion on ‘Loss from a heavenly perspective’.

Parenting adult children seems reversed but in reality it’s completely natural and biblical. Let’s look into what the Bible says about honoring our mothers and fathers.
